Restoring Comfort and Function in Patients with TMJ Disorders

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can significantly impact a patient’s daily life, often causing chronic jaw pain, limited movement, tension headaches, and even difficulty speaking or eating. At Dr. Stuart Dexter’s office, we take a comprehensive and conservative approach to TMJ diagnosis and treatment with the goal of diagnosing the cause, relieving discomfort, restoring function, and preventing long-term joint damage.

TMJ disorders can have multiple contributing factors: bite misalignment, stress-related clenching, trauma, or degenerative joint changes. Our first step is always careful evaluation, assessing bite mechanics, joint movement, and associated symptoms. We often supplement this with CBCT imaging to evaluate bone structure and soft tissue positioning.

Treatment plans are tailored to the individual and may include:

  • Occlusal splints
  • Physical therapy referrals
  • Bite adjustment
In more complex cases, collaborative care with oral surgeons or other specialists may be appropriate.

As a prosthodontist, Dr. Dexter brings a unique perspective to TMJ management, ensuring that any restorative work not only relieves pain but also preserves joint health over time. We emphasize conservative management and patient education, guiding each individual through both short-term relief and long-term stabilization strategies.
